How to find a money coach in the UK

5 min read · Updated 30 September 2026

Short answer

Look for a money coach whose experience matches your situation, who explains clearly that coaching is education rather than regulated financial advice, who offers a free introductory conversation, and who focuses on your habits, confidence and goals rather than selling you products.

What a money coach actually does

A money coach helps you understand your finances, build habits and feel confident making decisions. Typical areas include budgeting, saving, clearing debt, money mindset, and preparing to invest.

Coaching is about you: your patterns, your goals and what gets in the way. A good coach helps you make your own informed choices rather than telling you which products to buy.

Coaching is not regulated financial advice

In the UK, personal recommendations about specific investments, pensions or mortgages are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Money coaching and financial education sit outside that — which is why a trustworthy coach says so clearly.

If you need a recommendation on a specific product, use an FCA-authorised adviser. You can check any firm or individual on the FCA Register. For free, impartial guidance, MoneyHelper is backed by the government.

Questions to ask before you start

What is your background and experience with situations like mine?

How do sessions work, how many are typical, and what does it cost in total?

Do you earn commission from any product you might mention? (The best answer is no.)

What will I be able to do on my own by the end?

Red flags

Pressure to decide quickly, promises of guaranteed returns, pushing a particular investment, or making you feel ashamed about where you are. Good coaching is judgement-free and paced around you.

Can I try money coaching for free first?

Many coaches offer a free introductory call. Empowering Wealth also has a free community and a free Money Identity Quiz so you can start before committing to coaching.

Do money coaches help with debt?

Yes, many do. Empowering Wealth's coaching team includes Kevin Taylor, who previously worked with Citizens Advice and StepChange supporting people out of debt.
