How to play Wordle: rules, best starting words and tips
4 min read · Updated 18 October 2026
Short answer
In Wordle you guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries. After each guess, green means the right letter in the right spot, yellow (gold in Wealth Wordle) means the letter is in the word but in another spot, and grey means it is not in the word. Start with a word that uses common letters, then use every clue in your next guess.
The rules
There is one hidden five-letter word each day, and everyone gets the same word. You have six guesses, and each guess must be a real word.
After each guess the tiles change colour. Green: the right letter in the right place. Yellow or gold: the letter is in the word, but somewhere else. Grey: the letter is not in the word at all.
A letter can appear more than once. If you guess a letter twice and it is only in the answer once, only one of your tiles will light up.
Best starting words
Good openers use common letters and several vowels. Popular choices include CRANE, SLATE, TRACE, AROSE and STARE.
In Wealth Wordle every answer is a money word, so openers like RATES, ASSET or SAVER work well too.
Strategies to solve in fewer guesses
Use your second guess to test five new letters if your first one gave few clues.
Never reuse a grey letter, and move gold letters to a new spot.
Watch out for common endings like -ER, -ED and -ING, and for double letters.
If you are stuck between several options, pick a guess that rules out the most letters, even if it can't be the answer.
A worked example in Wealth Wordle
Say you open with RATES and the R and E turn gold, but nothing is green. You now know the word has an R and an E, but not in those spots, and has no A, T or S.
A next guess like OWNER tests new letters and moves the E and R. Each game ends with a short, plain-English explanation of the word and one practical money tip.
